"PM’S 1300 FOR GREATER EFFICIENCY AND SAFETY
Following the successful operation of 12 vehicles fitted with the latest on board weighing equipment from PM Onboard, Hooton (Cheshire) based civil engineering and earthworks contractors D Morgan plc is to make the PM1300 standard fitting for all new vehicles.
D Morgan operates a 35 strong fleet of 32tonne gvw eight wheel tippers used predominantly to handle the movement of aggregates, overburden/soil and recycled waste across the North West utilising their own landfill sites and quarries.
As workshop manager Graham Bailey points out, switching to the PM1300 has not only brought greater operating efficiency, it has also helped to ensure vehicles are operated within legal weight limits. Site safety has been improved, also.
The accurate payload readings available with the PM1300 have replaced the element of guess work sometimes associated with previous generations of weighing equipment. It has also bought some unexpected spin offs. For example, when vying for new contracts, it can give the company a key advantage over competitors who don’t have the system fitted. Also, customers concerned about exactly what quantity they are paying for, can quickly hop in the cab and satisfy themselves that they are getting full measure.
The reverse is also true. D Morgan has the assurance that vehicles are working efficiently, to their legal capacity, and that any contract is therefore being completed with the minimum of vehicle movements and without already tight profit margins being further eroded.
Via a dash mounted multi channel screen, the PM1300, not only provides the driver with an accurate payload weight, it also gives similarly accurate axle distribution/loadings. In addition, by virtue of linking the screen to a rear mounted camera, there is an added safety benefit, especially when manoeuvring or loading/tipping at landfill, in quarries and on construction and building sites.
Last but not least, PM1300’s inclinometer checks ground levels on any tipping site and a stability warning sounds in the event that a lifting body is reaching ‘topple’ limits.
Discounting downtime, and costs due to accidents or unplanned maintenance, D Morgan estimates that the PM1300 will pay for itself within 2/3years - well before the vehicle it is fitted to becomes due for replacement. When it comes to residual value, Graham Bailey reckons the chassis with the equipment intact is likely to realise a modest bonus. That’s if he doesn’t switch the equipment over to the new chassis!
